McCarren Park Pool


What: After sitting drained for 28 consecutive summers (and eventually serving as a love-it-or-hate-it concert venue), the McCarren Park Pool in North Williamsburg has been returned to its former, water-filled glory. The pool, originally installed in 1936, will re-open to the public on June 28th with space for 1500 folks in its 37,571 square feet.

2012 Afropunk Festival

What: Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afro-punk Festival has become a Brooklyn intuition, the focal point for the burgeoning Afro-punk movement. Over the past seven years, the festival has presented new artists before they hit it big, such as Grammy-nominated Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae. Afro-punk mainstays like Saul Williams, The Dirtbombs, and Dallas Austin have also graced Afro-punk’s stages.

The 8th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival



What: This year, marks the 8th anniversary of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF). Established in 2005, this event has grown from a parking lot to the largest Hip-Hop cultural event in New York City on the Brooklyn Downtown waterfront that attracts over 20,000 Hip-Hop fans to the Borough of Kings annually.
The only event of its kind, The Festival is produced by Brooklyn Bodega and staffed by 90% volunteers and family-run. What: The 2012 Films on the Green Festival features 8 free French screenings all adapted from French and American literature.
