9th Annual Bubby's Pie Social

What: Come one, come all! We are seeking pie bakers for the 9th Annual Bubby’s Pie Social as a benefit for New York City Public Schools including P.S. 150 in Tribeca, and the High School for Food & Finance.

Last year’s Pie Social was a huge success. One hundred participants showed up to present their pies and over 500 people showed up to eat those pies. We’d like this year to be even bigger!

Your entry fee and homemade pie entitle you to 5 free tasting tickets* (you can share them) and a big blue ribbon. This is a social, not a contest, and we want to encourage all kinds of baking efforts, foster community, and  celebrate pie in all its varied glory.

Bakers report at 11:30AM for check-in and free coffee. Volunteers will circulate to help bakers so that they can taste and roam the social. We recommend bringing pies that do not need refrigeration (cream, ice cream, and custard pies are discouraged) because they can’t withstand four hours of sun and are likely to spoil outside on a warm day. We encourage savory pies as a good counterpoint to all of the dessert pies. We also encourage a strong turn out from our youngest bakers.

Lemonade, seltzer, coffee, and lots of kids running around with pie on their faces should make for a lovely autumn day. So sign up now and be a part of it all!

The International Chinese Culinary Competition

When someone speaks of gourmet dining, perhaps the first thing that will come to mind is an Italian dish like Carne Pizzaiola, perhaps French like Boeuf Bourguignon, or maybe even Japanese Sea Bream Sashimi. But no one thinks of Chop Suey, Orange Beef, or egg rolls. There is a very good reason for this: none of those dishes are authentic, traditional Chinese cooking.

NTD Television's Fifth Annual International Chinese Culinary Competition is out to change perception that by bringing together the top Chinese chefs from around the world and have them demonstrate the unparalleled cooking techniques, knife skills, and imagination inherent in traditional Chinese cuisine.

Over the course of two days, the competition will showcase the five major styles of Chinese cuisine: Sichuan(Szechuan), Shandong, Cantonese, Huaiyang, and Northeastern. Prizes will be awarded to each of the 5 cuisine winners including a $10,000 gold award, $3,000 silver award, and a $1,000 bronze award.

Lotte van den Berg: Agoraphobia/Pleinvrees

What: Award-winning director Lotte van den Berg’s Pleinvrees/Agoraphobia explores the impossibility of being together: we desire to be among people yet fear it; we hope to share our lives with others, but fearful of loss, we keep to ourselves.

Performed amidst the bustle of Times Square, a solitary man walks around, apparently talking to himself. Yet his words are streamed to bystanders and eavesdroppers— audience members who have called in to listen to him on their cell phones. Pleinvrees/Agoraphobia is at once an intimate performance about how this solitary man experiences the world and an insightful experience for an audience of spectators and passers-by.

Fashion's Night Out Highlights

Here are some top picks for tonight's event from the New York Times review:

Azealia: MAC SoHo, 506 Broadway, 7 to 10 p.m.
The Harlem rapper and lyricist Azealia Banks has parlayed her indie buzz into a T by Alexander Wang campaign. If that hasn’t anointed her into fashion’s front row, then her performance at MAC’s SoHo store just might. The cosmetics brand is also selling a limited-edition semi-matte lipstick in a dark plum called Yung Rapunxel ($15), named after Ms. Banks’s alter ego.

Carolina Herrera: 802 Madison Avenue, 5 to 7 p.m.
In contrast to the general circus mood, Carolina Herrera has planned a child-friendly carnival at her Madison Avenue shop. The designer teamed with Jessica Seinfeld’s charity Baby Buggy for an evening of magic shows, face painting and balloon animals. Tots and moms can walk away with limited edition, matching leather wrap bracelets for $50 each.

Cyndi Lauper, who has a memoir out this fall, along with new tunes and lyrics for the coming Broadway musical “Kinky Boots,” will perform at Manolo Blahnik.
Manolo Blahnik, 31 West 54th Street, 7:30 to 11 p.m.

Draw Something: Kate Spade, 454 Broome Street, 7 to 10 p.m.
