Miss America to help re-open Fairway

What: In a glorious Brooklyn triumph over Hurricane Sandy, Fairway Market in Red Hook is re-opening its doors for business. After four months of totally unfulfilling grocery shopping experiences, lovers of Fairway can return to the market to find that it’s better than ever, and it’s hanging out with Miss America.


Starting at 8am, the three-hour event will feature demos, giveaways, music, and Marty Markowitz, who will probably cut some sort of ribbon. Mallory Hagan, who became the first Miss Brooklyn to take the Miss America title last month, is also set to be there, and will likely be almost as beautiful as the 600 cheeses and exotic coffees that Fairway is proud to sell.

Face the Music Youth Ensemble

What: The talented young voices of the Kaufman Center's Face the Music Youth Ensemble show off their classical chops at this complimentary showcase. Known for shows inspired by current-day composers, these local preteens and teens have garnered rave reviews for interpretations of the likes of Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Terry Riley. Citi Pond Winter Film Festival: Chicago

What: Let yourself get razzle-dazzled by the musical spectacular “Chicago,” presented on our 900-square-foot outdoor screen as part of the Citi Pond Winter Film Festival. This star-studded blockbuster takes you back to prohibition era in the Windy City, where a couple of criminal chorus girls try to get out of jail and back onto the stage with the help of a crooked (but very handsome) lawyer. Queens Lunar New Year Parade

What: The parade is the highlight of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Flushing. Look for dragon dancers, steel drummers, and fireworks. About 4,000 people march each year.

What: Triple Canopy is pleased to present an evening of viewing and conversation with artist Sara Greenberger Rafferty and poet Catherine Wagner, focusing on the role of televised images, narrative, and sound as both source material for and counterpoint to the participants' work.
