A Rare Chance to Stroll a Park Avenue Tunnel

What: Since the 1930s, the Park Avenue tunnel has been closed to pedestrians. On Saturday, the city will temporarily shut the tunnel to car traffic, and the 1,394-foot cavern will be turned into an incandescent, echoing, interactive art show.

Participants will be instructed to walk to a midpoint in the tunnel and deliver short messages into a silver intercom. The messages will then billow outward in waves of sound and arching light until they disappear. The intensity of each beam will be determined by the pitch and volume of the messenger’s voice. And the messages will shoot out quickly, one after another, creating a seemingly endless, ever-changing cascade of sound and light.

When: Saturday August 3, 2013  |  7am-1pm. The show will be staged on three consecutive Saturdays, the last on Aug. 17
Where: 33rd St & Park Ave.

Events also take place across the harbor at Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Met in the Parks Schedule

Every year, Met in the Park offers New Yorkers and visitors alike the opportunity to experience a free, live opera performance in New York City's parks. While this offers an opportunity for the uninitiated to get a taste of opera, more also an opportunity to gather with friends and enjoy drinks, snacks and conversation with an operatic background.

Things to Bring:
  • Food and drink
  • Jacket or Sweater (after the sun sets, the temperature can drop and you'll be happy to have it)
  • Bug spray to keep mosquitoes away (citronella candles can also do double duty)
  • Blankets to sit on (a plastic garbage bag makes a great liner between your blanket/beach towel and the moist ground)
