Bade Stageberg Cox Architecture's #StreetTheater

What: Street Seats, a collection of reclaimed chairs found on the streets of New york City and given a new life by repairs and a coat of taxi-cab yellow paint, is the basis of a new urban research project called Street Theater.
The yellow chairs, arranged in 7 rows of 7, are positioned on a plaza in Times Square where visitors are invited to sit and view the spectacle of Times Square. The precise spacing of the chairs as they’re arranged each morning mimics theater seating, with Times Square as its stage. The rearrangement of the chairs throughout the course of the day becomes a performance about the ways in which people use public space and shape it to suit their needs. With their taxi cab yellow paint, the chairs re-manifest taxis back on this Broadway plaza.
May 16th - 18th, 2014
Open for public use: May 16th & 17th, 11:00 am - 10:00 pm;
May 18th, 11:00 am - 7:00pm
Installation on view 24 hours

Jim Findlay: Dream of the Red Chamber, a performance for a sleeping audience

What: Times Square Arts, in partnership with Allied Partners and Brickman Real Estate, present Dream of the Red Chamber, a performance for a sleeping audience, produced by Collapsable Giraffe and 3-Legged Dog. A literal dream play, the work is performed for an audience that is encouraged to experience the work while they fall in and out of sleep. This durational performance installation invites the audience to take an immersive journey through Cao Xueqin's 18th century Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" -- an epic love story between a stone and a flower, framed by a dizzying series of metaphysical dreams.
      The set, video, sound, and lighting design of Dream of the Red Chamber, a performance for a sleeping audience will transform the vast basement space of the iconic Brill Building into an environment that advocates and facilitates sleep. The audience can choose to experience the work while lying and/or sleeping in one of the many beds that will fill the basement, or sit and watch from a more traditional chair, as the performers travel through the space and the story unfolds.
When: May 9th - 17th, 2014
