Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace

What: Join us with family, friends and an open heart, and share your wish for a better world. Feel inspired by music and dance, and float a lantern for peace. Add your light to the light of others.

At sunset, Her Holiness Shinso Ito, the head priest of Shinnyo-en and one of the highest-ranking woman Buddhist leaders in the world, will preside over a special closing Lantern Floating ceremony, also open to the public. Hundreds of the LED candle-lighted paper lanterns will be floated on the water, illuminating Hearst Plaza in a uniquely captivating visual experience in New York City.

The Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace is meant to inspire a spirit of harmony and compassion that transcends all boundaries of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, and religious tradition - and empower people to create a stronger force for peace in our families, our communities, and globally. Fall 2014 NARS Open Studios

What: The NARS Foundation invites you down to Sunset Park to experience artists in their natural habitat: the studio. The Fall 2014 NARS Open Studios offers an opportunity to foster engagement between artist and community. Artists open their doors to expose an otherwise private workspace, gaining feedback and exposure for their work. Neighbors and visitors, in turn, get access to the creative process happening right next door and a glimpse into spaces that they might not otherwise see.
We are also pleased to announce that our neighbors, chashama at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, will be hosting Open Studios as well, with a free water taxi running between Wall Street, DUMBO, and Sunset Park. For more information, click here. NARS will operate a free shuttle bus between the two studios running every fifteen minutes.

New York on Location!

What: Museum of the Moving Image, Theatrical Teamsters Local 817, and Kaufman Astoria Studios will present New York on Location, a day-long, free family-friendly outdoor event that offers a behind-the-scenes look at film production in New York.

The public will have the rare opportunity to go inside 20+ working movie trailers and trucks--straight from productions shooting in New York--and speak directly with movie professionals about what they do on set. Trucks will include star dressing rooms, electrical, grip, prop, camera, hair and makeup, wardrobe, special effects trucks, and more. Key film craftspeople will demonstrate and explain firsthand their roles in the movie-making process and how they got there. In addition, stunt professionals will present high falls, street fighting, stunt driving, and more. Food will be available from movie catering trucks.

New York on Location will take place in the new gated back lot at Kaufman Astoria Studios (current home to Orange Is the New Black, Nurse Jackie, Sesame Street, and other productions), at the Museum, and on surrounding streets. The Museum will be free all day and invites visitors to explore Behind the Screen, its dynamic core exhibition on how film and television shows are made, marketed, and shown.
