What: Since the 1930s, the Park Avenue tunnel has been closed to pedestrians. On Saturday, the city will temporarily shut the tunnel to car traffic, and the 1,394-foot cavern will be turned into an incandescent, echoing, interactive art show.
Participants will be instructed to walk to a midpoint in the tunnel and deliver short messages into a silver intercom. The messages will then billow outward in waves of sound and arching light until they disappear. The intensity of each beam will be determined by the pitch and volume of the messenger’s voice. And the messages will shoot out quickly, one after another, creating a seemingly endless, ever-changing cascade of sound and light.
When: Saturday August 3, 2013 | 7am-1pm. The show will be staged on three consecutive Saturdays, the last on Aug. 17
Where: 33rd St & Park Ave.

City of Water Day Festival
What: Harbor education is a big focus at many of the island's events this year, and it all culminates in the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's City of Water Day Festival. Of course, the best way to learn about the city's water is to get out on it, by either taking a free boat tour or joining a flotilla of kayakers, canoes paddlers, and sailors. But there are activities for landlubbers as well, including waterfront fishing, watershed demonstrations, and a critter touch tank for kids, plus food vendors and live music. Events also take place across the harbor at Liberty State Park in New Jersey.
