Weekend Activities

Brazilian Day
The Brazilian Day festival is a spirited annual celebration of Brazil's Independence Day and the country's culture in New York City and around the world. Now in its 28th year, the festivities include Brazilian music, dance, food and more (though the food isn't free, so don't forget to bring some cash if you want a literal taste of Brazil). The all-day event, which starts at 10am, features singers Gusttavo Lima and Zeca Pagodinho, as well as many other celebrity musicians from Brazil. The main stage is located on East 46th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues, but the festival extends throughout the area known as "Little Brazil."
NYC Unicycle Festival
NYC's annual Unicycle Festival rolls into town this weekend (on one wheel). While the fest spans three days with tours and rides around the City, you'll find the best sights for kids at the Governors Island stop on August 31 and September 1. Check out demonstrations, races and even unicycle sports like basketball and hockey.
Richmond County Fair
There's fun for the whole family at this three-decade-old Staten Island tradition. Kids will get a kick out of circus performers, crafts and even farm animals, while parents will enjoy the live music. Rides, food and reliable county fair standbys like a pie-eating contest round out the weekend. Plus, proceeds benefit Historic Richmond Town, itself a year-round attraction that offers a window into the City's past.

The long-overdue retrospective of West Coast painter and musician Llyn Foulkes, at the New Museum, provides more than 100 works from his long and productive career, ranging from cool western landscapes to emotional, sometimes confrontational portraits.
