On Kawara – Silence

What: One of the most anticipated shows of 2015's art season, this retrospective of Japanese artist On Kawara shares a life's work that helped create the conceptual art movement. But "retrospective" isn't quite the right word, for as curator Jeffrey Weiss points out, On's extremely disciplined methodologies and conscious choice never to stray from them meant the artist's work changed very little over his career. This devotion to practice created a stunning (and massive) trove of meticulous collections: thirty years of daily postcards stamped with the time the artist awoke, small canvases with the date each was created in stark white paint, and perhaps his best-known work, a list of every date from one million years before his conception through one million years after it.

Competing Intelligence: Digital Architecture Masterclass at the Guggenheim

What: The Guggenheim welcomes current students and recent graduates (within the last 5 years) of architecture programs for a one-day masterclass at the museum to join an experiment using artificial intelligence to evaluate design.

As artificial intelligence migrates into more aspects of everyday life, competitions are one avenue through which to test its limits in architecture. With collaborators in New York and Helsinki, the Guggenheim is pairing artificial and human intelligence to create a new understanding of contemporary architecture using the 1,700 plus entries to the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition as a data set. The results will be exhibited in Guggenheim Helsinki Now, a forthcoming exhibition at the Kunsthalle Helsinki and used in a digital app. All participants will be credited for their contributions.

The masterclass will be led by Hugo Liu, principal scientist at eBay with a PhD from the MIT Media Lab, and Troy Conrad Therrien, Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives, with architect and founder of Exodvs, Martti Kalliala, over video conference from Helsinki.

Participants should enter at the 89th Street entrance and head down to the Sackler Center. Lunch will be provided.
Participants should also bring their own laptops and power cords if possible.

When: Saturday, March 7th, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
