Good Riddance Day

What: Destroy your worries and bad memories of 2013 and start fresh in 2014!
Good Riddance day is open to the public to discard any unpleasant, embarrassing and downright depressing memories from 2013. Have a picture of an old flame, mortgage documents, old tax records or a pile of medical bills?

For this annual New Year’s tradition, Cintas will provide one of its mobile shredding trucks in Times Square for participants to watch the physical evidence of their funny, outlandish and forgettable memories of 2013 get permanently discarded. The public can also write their bad memories on-site to be shredded. A rubber mallet will be available for items that require smashing.

An iPad will be awarded to the participant with the most intriguing “good riddance” story.  Only participants who come the day of will be eligible for the prize.

Can't make it to Times Square?  Memories of crazy ex-bosses, over-exposed celebrities, corrupt politicians, fashion disasters and ill-fated romances can be submitted here or tweet at @TimesSquareNYC and tell us what you want to say #goodriddance to.

Good Riddance Day is inspired by a Latin American tradition in which New Year’s revelers stuffed dolls with objects representing bad memories before setting them on fire.

Housed in AIGA's gallery in the heart of the Flatiron district, Divine Details will feature some of the worlds most beautiful and well-crafted common goods; from the perfect bottle-opener, to a shatterless crystal wine glass, to the most fashionable and functional tote for your CitiBike. The 33 showcased designer products are each accompanied by an original fictional story inspired by each object, commissioned from some of New York's most acclaimed writers, including music writer Garnette Cadogan (Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Vibe), Brooklyn food blogger Cathy Erway (The Art of Eating In, Eater's Top 10), and playwright Bekah Brunstetter (OOHRAH!, MTV's Underemployed). In addition to daily store hours, the exhibition will also host a series of interactive events entitled; Further Details; focusing on design's relationship to food, music, and story.
