New York City Honey Fest 2013

What: The Brooklyn Grange Urban Rooftop Farm and Rockaway Beach Club host a sweet party on the boardwalk at Queens' Rockaway Beach. Festivities include beekeeping and honey extraction demos, and tastings from local honey makers and food purveyors. Kids can also work on a giant, collaborative, bee-themed mural.

Wikipedia Takes America 2013 - Queens

What: The Wikipedia Takes Queens photo scavenger hunt is aimed at illustrating Wikipedia articles covering the wondrous sights and history of the County of Queens!  Preferably bring a digital camera with removable memory card. If using a phone-camera, please bring the necessary cable to transfer your photos.
Between 11AM and noon, check-in at the starting point.
At noon, we'll go over the rules and distribute the items list. You will have four hours to make your away across the borough to take your pictures. Be artistic! Be creative! Have fun!
At 4PM, arrive at the final destination (TBA) to download your photos, grab a cold beverage and some snacks.
After all the teams have arrived, we'll view (and judge!) your photos and tally up the points. May the best team win!
Stick around for the after party/Wi-kiki!

Teams must consist of three or more people. (If you don't have a team, don't worry, we'll find one for you.)
Teams must stay together.
Photos for the Wiki Loves Monuments contest should not include faces and are discouraged.
Photos for this Wikipedia Loves Queens contest can include faces and are encouraged. Bonus points!!


When: Saturday September 21, 2013.
Where: The starting point is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Queens in Major Mark Park in Jamaica, Queens. Take the F train to 169th Street OT take the E, J, or Z trains to Archer Avenue and take the Q54 bus along Archer Avenue.

West Indian Carnival Day Parade 2013

Wikipedia Takes Brooklyn

What: Join our Wikipedia Takes Brooklyn scavenger hunt and photo contest, aimed at illustrating Wikipedia articles covering the wondrous sights of the County of Kings!
The afternoon will be spent on your Brooklyn photo wiki-odyssey, and there will also be Wikipedia discussion and learning sessions (including open office hours and one-on-one trainings) back at the library if you return early.
Be back at the library by 5pm, and we'll spend the last hour of the day helping you upload your photos to Wikipedia.
The event is being held as part of "Wiki Weekend" at the BPL, and there will be a taste of the overlapping Wikiotics.org "Families Learning Bilingually" session for part of our afternoon Saturday, and then for all of Sunday September 8 (we will have opportunities for informal Wikipedia sessions on Sunday as well).
No special wiki knowledge is required at all, just a camera and a love of the borough!

New York International Salsa Congress Dance & Music Festival
Get ready to salsa! Each Labor Day weekend in the City, the New York International Salsa Congress Dance & Music Festival comes to town, featuring four days and five nights of nonstop fun. The 13th annual festival takes place at the New York Hilton Midtown. 
Metropolitan Opera Summer HD Festival
Enjoy the City’s best opera for free this summer. For the fifth year in a row, the Metropolitan Opera is presenting free HD video screenings of 10 productions that showcase today's biggest opera stars. As long as the sky remains clear, you can grab a seat outdoors at Lincoln Center Plaza and enjoy some of the classics.
Last Day of the Beach Season - Sept 2
There are plenty of sunbathing and swimming spots open for public recreation around NYC. Head to Brighton Beach and Coney Island to people-watch; Rockaway Beach to surf; and Orchard Beach to observe its range of wildlife. Labor Day is the final day that lifeguards will be on duty from 10am to 6pm.
