Chile Pepper Festival 2013

What: Whether you like yours sweet, hot, or downright fiery, this annual chile fete, put on by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, should have something to satisfy. Now in its 21st year, the Chile Pepper Festival features music, a marketplace, tours, and a slate of some of the area's leading culinary minds, all fired up by the special and often misunderstood fruit — and the cultures that cook with it. Hot sauces, pickles, spice rubs, and other delicacies are available for tasting and purchase.

Special Concert by Yumi Kurosawa

What: Japanese Kotoist Yumi Kurosawa is joined by guest artist and tabla master Deep Singh for an innovative musical performance emphasizing both tradition and modernity. Kurosawa, labeled a “mesmerizing… inventive, cosmopolitan composer,” by The New York Times, will showcase her unique approach to the Koto by venturing beyond the limits of traditional acoustics, exploring classical techniques with contemporary, electronically-infused flair. Kurosawa’s solo virtuosity, featured for the first half of the concert, will then be accented with the echoing, sharp tones of Singh’s Indian tabla.

Orphan Train, The Musical

What: In the 1800s, “orphan trains” from New York’s Grand Central Terminal sent 250,000 New York children West to live with frontier families.
Orphan Train, The Musical is a tale of young frontier heroes and heroines with the truest grit you've ever seen on a musical stage — the saga of 6 Iowa-bound orphans on the greatest adventure of their lives.
Presented as a special feature entertainment during Grand Central’s 2013 Centennial Celebration, Orphan Train is a riveting family show that stars a crop of talented young actors from Rosie O’Donnell’s Theatre Kids, former Beauty and the Beast lead, Steve Blanchard, and DeWitt Fleming, Jr. of Riverdance and Cirque du Soleil.

Affordable Art Fair

What: Art goes to the masses during this annual showcase. Get introduced to emerging artists and new galleries, plus check out special programming and installations during the four-day event. While the “affordable” art still comes with a considerable price tag (more than half are under $5,000 and a handful fall under $500), the cost to browse is a bargain. Plus, all programs and activities are free with admission.

High Line Social Soup Experiment

What: What happens when hundreds of people gather for a one-pot meal at a communal table in a restaurant without walls on the High Line?
Join us to find out. Come with an appetite, and meet your neighbors. Sit elbow-to-elbow at one long table and eat a simple, substantial, and economical lunch: a large bowl of nourishing soup with a hunk of hearty bread. 
The meal is open to visitors of all ages. Space is limited and advance registration is required.
