JapanTown to Give New York City a Taste of Japan in Three Themed Festivals

Starting off JapanTown on July 17th, 2010 is the Cool Japan festival in the East Village, NYC's unofficial Japan Town. Highlighting the popular elements that make Japanese culture "cool," this festival offers Japanese robots to antiques to favorite snacks such as yakimochi and okonomiyaki. Visitors are also invited to participate in a Japanese street fashion contest; winners receive a prize from a JapanTown sponsor.

The Healthy Food & Green festival on August 22nd in Midtown enlightens visitors about select wholesome Japanese foods. Look for macrobiotic specialties from Souen Noodle restaurant, pesticide-free Japanese produce from Suzuki Farm, miso beef from Marukome, and soy products from Kikkoman.

The Soul Food festival on September 26th in the Upper East Side is all about Japanese soul food—the authentic dishes unique to specific regions of Japan. Visitors can sample such eats as Kyushu grilled tonton pork, Japanese curry, fried soba and gyoza, and konjac. The agricultural government of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost island, is to showcase its regional products as well.

She & Him at Governors Island

FREE July 4th Concert at 12PM/Show: 4PM

She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration evolved into a bona fide, touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford.

Northside Festival

Tomorrow's Northside Festival aims to outline Brooklyn's proudly hazy music scene, even as it spans musical styles and venues scattered across the borough.
Northside runs Thursday June 24 through Sunday June 27, touching down in everything from scrappy South Williamsburg DIY spaces (Death by Audio, Glasslands) to riverfront playgrounds on Greenpoint's northern fringe (Newton Barge Park), from established clubs (Public Assembly, Europa) to huge concert halls (Music Hall of Williamsburg) to bowling alleys (Brooklyn Bowl).
It might not make for the most cohesive (or walkable) festival experience, but it's somehow comforting to view Northside Festival as a panoply of North Brooklyn's musical goings-on that brings it all together and keeps it diffuse at once. And the $50 festival badge lets your soak it all in at a ridiculous value. (You can buy the badger or individual tickets here.)

Sheckys Girls' Night Out NYC Edition!

Back in March we wrote about this event and how dreadful it was because of the amount of people and the lack of breathing room. This time I had a ball with my sister and sister in law; it was their first Sheckys event and they are coming back the next time they are in town.

This time, we went on a Thursday and it was super. We were able to walk the aisles and get drinks without having to wait a single minute on a line. Lean Cuisine had a kiosk in which they introduced their latest products. There was also a beer pairing, which of course I couldn't participate in. Maybelline had a makeover section that of course everyone wanted to do, and I didn't feel like standing in line for a long period of time. My fellow Scribble did however, and she said that it was not really worth the wait. It was a small makeup touch-up/consultation. On another note, I won a chapstick on the 92.3 Now radio station wheel!

To celebrate their website launch, Sheckys also had a point collection system that will allow you to get a prize based on the amount of points collected every time you make a purchase. I forgot to redeem mine even though I didn't have enough to get anything, but didn't ask if this can be carried over. My sister purchased a beautiful pair of earrings from Lia Sophia, and a candle from another vendor whose name escapes me at the moment. I purchased some soap from Body Blessing and we all pooled our money together to purchase underwear from Lolly 38. Of course, the fun part was not in finding the size, but picking out what flirty, sexy wording we wanted printed on the back of the lingerie ;)

The goodie bag, as always, was super. I have not found another event that can rival this one in that area.
The contents of the bag were:
Dr. Scholl's® For Her Open Shoe® Insoles
Suave Naturals Body wash
Febreze Flameless Luminary Started Kit and two refills
Febreze Room Spray
Febreze Scented Reed Diffuser
Band-aid DryFit Flexible Fabric

Nivea Body Happy Sensation
Goody Color Collection
Aveeno positively radiant daily moisturizer
Aveeno Shampoo and Conditioner
Eez-Thru Flossers
Venus Embrace
Dentek Floss Picks
Lady Speed Stick Stainguard
A Book by author Karin Slaughter - Undone
Rembrandt Toothpaste
Colgate Max White Toothpaste
Suave Body Lotion Aloe with Cucumber
Vita Fusion
The Body Shop Love Etc...
and A Pair of Heart Shape sunglasses (which my niece is going to adore ;))
