Lower East Side Gets its First Annual Holiday Parade

What:
This holiday season, an annual tradition is beginning for the Lower East Side. A local holiday parade complete with vintage fire truck.

The Pacemakers, New York’s senior-citizen’s dance team, in partnership with the NYPD and the FDNY Foundation, are producing this inaugural event. It’ll feature Santa, Mrs. Claus, a Chanukah celebrant, and a Kwanzaa celebrant stop the vintage vehicle, plus another two dozen holiday characters dancing in the street and doling chocolate Chanukah gelt and candy canes.

“Celebrating my beloved Lower East Side is such an honor,” says Susan Avery, founder of the New York Pacemakers, and third-generation Lower East Sider. “Our diverse, immigrant, working-class community deserves its moment to party with Santa and his friends.”

The fire truck is “Engine 2,” courtesy of the Fort Pitt station on the Lower East Side.
