History
The Welling Court Mural Project began after Jonathan and Josh Ellis, representing the Welling Court community, met at Ad Hoc Art’s Bushwick gallery in 2009. They loved the experience nd invited Ad Hoc Art to bring their expertise, appreciation, and vision to beautify their Queens neighborhood. It was a perfect fit, as there were surfaces to be painted and Ad Hoc knew people loved painting surfaces. Jonathan had already planted the seeds and acquired permission to paint, which was key. Thus, having the community support and a timely visit by Poland’s wall-crushing M-City, the first mural was painted in the freezing temperatures of December 2009. Ad Hoc Art used the rest of the winter to plan the launch of the first multi-block project of over 40 murals that occurred in May 2010. After continuing to hit the pavement and meet more members of the community, the project grew one mural at a time.

It is one of the best collections of contemporary street culture on earth, all within this hidden gem of NYC! It is on pubic streets, so it is FREE and open to the public 24/7/365.

Smorgasburg Sets Up for the Summer at Hudson Yards

A miniature Smorgasburg is heading to Hudson Yards. The constantly expanding outdoor food festival will set up shop on West 34th Street near the massive new development every Tuesday and Wednesday from May 14 until August 13.

The vendor lineup will be the same for May and June before switching things up for the second half of the “Mini-Smorg” pop-up’s run. To start, Tuesdays will feature an ice cream shop, a burger stand, a dumpling vendor, Greek meat plates, Japanese vegetable pancake purveyor Oconomi, and Jianbing Co., serving the Chinese breakfast wrap jianbing. Burgers and jianbing are back on Wednesdays, plus Jamaican, fries, bao, and lobster. The vendors will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hudson Yards is home to a slew of dining options. The addition of smaller vendors and a casual, more affordable setup works toward adding some dimension to the dining scene there. Oconomi will be the first Hudson Yards option specializing in Japanese food, and Jianbing and Mao’s Bao will be the only options dedicated to Chinese cuisine.

The Hudson Yards “Mini-Smorg” kicks off next Tuesday and Wednesday. This brings up the total of Smorgasburg locations to four:
  • Friday market at the World Trade Center
  • Saturday market in Williamsburg
  • Sunday market in Prospect Park
See the full lineup for the Hudson Yards location below:

Self-Sustaining Micro-Home Finds A Resting Spot In NYC’s Time Square

Home is where the heart is, and if that means to always be on the move, this cozy pod-like house could be for you. The ‘Ecocapsule’ will take refuge at Times Square between May 10 and May 22. Find out more here.

The egg-shaped ‘Ecocapsule’ has trotted countrysides, clifftops, and more since 2015, but there’s one place it hasn’t touched: the US. Thankfully, the self-sustainable environmentally-friendly home is soon launching in the country, and will debut at Times Square’s Design Pavilion on May 10.

Designed by Slovakian architectural firm Nice&Wise studio(previously Nice Architects), the ‘Ecocapsule’ is completely self-sustainable and can house two people for approximately a year just about anywhere.

It runs on a 9,744 watt-hour battery, 750-watt wind turbine, and entails high-efficiency solar cells as well as a unit that collections and filters rainwater.

Inside, the 88-square-foot pod features a foldable double bed, reclinable desk space, a kitchenette with running water, a shower, and a composting toilet. Its shell is 7.8 inches thick, the optimal size to keep homeowners comfortable in temperatures as low as 14°F and as high as 104°F.
