What: Emmy Award–winning tap dancer Jason Samuels
Smith teams up with musicians of Owen “Fiidla” Brown’s quartet in a new
work exploring the African American experience, from the dance and
percussion on slave ships of the Middle Passage through the jazz,
be-bop, and hip-hop eras. Set to score commissioned by the Charles and
Joan Gross Family Foundation, the piece brings together Western and
traditional African instruments in a multitude of musical styles,
revealing points where history and art converge.
Jason Samuels Smith won an Emmy
and American Choreography Award for his tribute to Gregory Hines and
has performed as a special guest or contributed choreography for Black
Nativity, Idlewild, So You Think You Can Dance, Bring in Da'Noise, Bring
in Da'Funk on Broadway, and Psych.
